Pr\u00e9sentation de notre palmar\u00e8s Top Banques.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>La reprise a \u00e9t\u00e9 rapide, pour les grandes banques africaines, en 2021. Les revenus et les b\u00e9n\u00e9fices avaient \u00e9t\u00e9 affect\u00e9s au plus fort des restrictions dues \u00e0 la pand\u00e9mie de la Covid-19, mais une combinaison de hauts niveaux de r\u00e9silience des banques et de soutien proactif de certaines banques centrales les a aid\u00e9es \u00e0 faire face \u00e0 la forte crise. Les b\u00e9n\u00e9fices ont rebondi et l\u2019on constate une augmentation du capital (8,7%) et des actifs (11,3%), tandis que les co\u00fbts sont de plus en plus ma\u00eetris\u00e9s gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une plus grande attention port\u00e9e \u00e0 la banque num\u00e9rique.<\/p>\n<p>De plus, le processus d\u2019int\u00e9gration du secteur bancaire en cours sur le continent devrait b\u00e9n\u00e9ficier de la mise en \u0153uvre r\u00e9guli\u00e8re de la Zone de libre-\u00e9change continentale africaine (ZLECAf). Les \u00e9chelons sup\u00e9rieurs de notre tableau des 100 premi\u00e8res banques africaines de cette ann\u00e9e ont un aspect tr\u00e8s familier. Les 15 plus grandes banques, mesur\u00e9es par les fonds propres, sont les m\u00eames que l\u2019ann\u00e9e derni\u00e8re, bien qu\u2019il y ait eu quelques mouvements modestes au sein du classement.<\/p>\n<p>La Standard Bank Group d\u2019Afrique du Sud reste de loin la plus grande banque d\u2019Afrique, avec des fonds propres de 13,6 milliards de dollars, devant la National Bank of Egypt (7,2 milliards\u00a0$). Les plus grands changements en haut du tableau sont la Banque Misr d\u2019\u00c9gypte qui passe de la huiti\u00e8me \u00e0 la troisi\u00e8me position, son capital ayant plus que doubl\u00e9 entre 2019 et 2021 pour atteindre 7,2 milliards\u00a0$, et la FirstRand d\u2019Afrique du Sud qui passe de la sixi\u00e8me \u00e0 la quatri\u00e8me position, avec une augmentation de 1,5 milliard\u00a0$ de son capital pour atteindre 6,4 milliards de dollars. La banque marocaine Attijariwafa Bank et la banque sud-africaine Absa Bank forment le reste du Top 6.<\/p>\n<p>En effet, les 15 plus grandes banques africaines sont toutes bas\u00e9es en Afrique du Nord ou en Afrique du Sud, aux deux extr\u00e9mit\u00e9s du continent. Attijariwafa et la National Bank of Egypt ont r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement progress\u00e9 dans nos classements au cours de la derni\u00e8re d\u00e9cennie, brisant ce qui \u00e9tait auparavant un bloc solide de quatre, voire cinq banques sud-africaines en haut du tableau.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Forte concurrence en Alg\u00e9rie<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dans notre tableau, le capital fait r\u00e9f\u00e9rence au capital de premi\u00e8re cat\u00e9gorie : le capital initial des banques, plus les r\u00e9serves et les b\u00e9n\u00e9fices non distribu\u00e9s, qui d\u00e9montre la solidit\u00e9 globale d\u2019une banque. La colonne des actifs couvre essentiellement la taille de leur portefeuille de pr\u00eats. Il convient de noter que la date des r\u00e9sultats les plus r\u00e9cents varie d\u2019une banque \u00e0 l\u2019autre, mais nous avons utilis\u00e9 les dates les plus r\u00e9centes.<\/p>\n<p>Bien que les banques libyennes soient g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement bien capitalis\u00e9es, aucune donn\u00e9e n\u2019est disponible et elles ne peuvent donc pas \u00eatre incluses. La plupart des grandes banques du continent sont bas\u00e9es sur des march\u00e9s assez ouverts. Les seules exceptions sont la Banque Ext\u00e9rieure d\u2019Alg\u00e9rie et la Banque Nationale d\u2019Alg\u00e9rie. Le march\u00e9 alg\u00e9rien est encore plus \u00e9troitement r\u00e9glement\u00e9 que la plupart des autres, bien que six banques alg\u00e9riennes figurent dans notre Top 100, ce qui indique une forte concurrence sur le march\u00e9 national.<\/p>\n<p>Le secteur dans son ensemble a connu une croissance modeste, avec une hausse de 8,7 % du capital combin\u00e9 du Top 100, qui atteint 135 milliards $, contre 124 milliards $ un an plus t\u00f4t et 101 milliards de dollars en 2019. Les actifs augmentent plus rapidement, avec une hausse de 11,3 %, passant de 1,4 trillion de dollars dans notre enqu\u00eate de 2021 \u00e0 1,6 trillion de dollars cette ann\u00e9e, soit une augmentation significative par rapport aux 1,2 trillion de dollars enregistr\u00e9s en 2019 avant la pand\u00e9mie.<\/p>\n<p>Une autre indication de la force en profondeur du secteur est le fait qu\u2019Arab Tunisian Bank a eu besoin de 231 millions de dollars de capital pour s\u2019assurer la centi\u00e8me position dans notre classement, en comparaison avec les 216 millions $ de Gulf Bank Alg\u00e9rie l\u2019ann\u00e9e derni\u00e8re.<\/p>\n<p>Bien que les revenus des banques africaines n\u2019aient pas \u00e9t\u00e9 aussi affect\u00e9s par la pand\u00e9mie mondiale que beaucoup l\u2019avaient craint, les b\u00e9n\u00e9fices ont \u00e9t\u00e9 quelque peu d\u00e9prim\u00e9s mais ont fortement rebondi cette ann\u00e9e. Les b\u00e9n\u00e9fices globaux combin\u00e9s des quatre grandes banques sud-africaines ont augment\u00e9 de 99 % en 2021 par rapport \u00e0 l\u2019ann\u00e9e pr\u00e9c\u00e9dente, en grande partie gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la diminution des taux de pr\u00eats non productifs (PNP), mais aussi \u00e0 la baisse des co\u00fbts r\u00e9sultant des strat\u00e9gies de num\u00e9risation. Certaines banques ont d\u00e9sormais des taux de NPL inf\u00e9rieurs \u00e0 ceux d\u2019avant la pand\u00e9mie, la CRDB de Tanzanie, par exemple, ayant r\u00e9duit son taux de 8,6% en 2018 \u00e0 3% cette ann\u00e9e. Les exigences plus strictes en mati\u00e8re de r\u00e9serves de capital qui avaient \u00e9t\u00e9 impos\u00e9es par les r\u00e9gulateurs sur certains march\u00e9s au cours de la derni\u00e8re d\u00e9cennie semblent avoir rendu de nombreuses banques plus r\u00e9sistantes \u00e0 l\u2019impact de la pand\u00e9mie.<\/p>\n<p><strong>R\u00e9partition r\u00e9gionale<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pr\u00e8s de la moiti\u00e9 de notre Top 100, soit un total de 47 banques, provient d\u2019Afrique du Nord, la r\u00e9gion repr\u00e9sentant presque exactement la m\u00eame proportion du total des capitaux et des actifs, soit environ 48%. L\u2019Afrique australe est la deuxi\u00e8me r\u00e9gion la plus importante, avec 21 banques, une part de 32% du capital et 33% de tous les actifs. L\u2019Afrique de l\u2019Ouest et l\u2019Afrique de l\u2019Est sont moins repr\u00e9sent\u00e9es qu\u2019on pourrait le penser, avec respectivement 17 et 14 repr\u00e9sentants dans le Top 100. Pourtant, c\u2019est l\u2019Afrique centrale qui est de loin le maillon le plus faible du paysage bancaire du continent. Continuant \u00e0 d\u00e9pendre fortement de l\u2019exportation de mati\u00e8res premi\u00e8res, le secteur priv\u00e9 reste limit\u00e9 dans la plupart des autres secteurs de l\u2019\u00e9conomie.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle nationale, l\u2019\u00c9gypte compte le plus grand nombre de banques dans notre Top 100, soit 25, loin devant le Nigeria (12), le Maroc, le Kenya et la Tunisie (7 chacun). Pourtant, les actifs ont augment\u00e9 de 11,3 %, passant de 1,4 billion de dollars dans notre enqu\u00eate de 2021 \u00e0 1,6 billion $ cette ann\u00e9e. Les b\u00e9n\u00e9fices ont rebondi tandis que le capital et les actifs ont augment\u00e9 dans l\u2019enqu\u00eate de cette ann\u00e9e sur les 100 meilleures banques africaines.<\/p>\n<p>Bien qu\u2019il n\u2019y ait que six banques sud-africaines dans notre tableau, elles se situent toutes dans le haut du classement. Elles se livrent une concurrence consid\u00e9rable sur les march\u00e9s des particuliers et des entreprises, ce qui souligne le fait que la concurrence ne n\u00e9cessite pas un grand nombre de banques. En effet, comme l\u2019a d\u00e9montr\u00e9 l\u2019exp\u00e9rience du secteur bancaire nig\u00e9rian au cours des 20 derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, il est pr\u00e9f\u00e9rable d\u2019avoir un plus petit nombre de banques hautement capitalis\u00e9es dans le cadre d\u2019un r\u00e9gime r\u00e9glementaire concurrentiel qu\u2019un plus grand nombre de banques faiblement capitalis\u00e9es qui sont plus vuln\u00e9rables aux al\u00e9as des tendances \u00e9conomiques internationales incontr\u00f4lables.<\/p>\n<p>On compte six nouvelles banques dans le Top 100, tous dans le quartile inf\u00e9rieur de notre classement, men\u00e9es par Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria, Arab Investment Bank et Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank-Egypt en 75<sup>e<\/sup>, 76<sup>e<\/sup> et 77<sup>e<\/sup> positions respectivement. Quatre des nouveaux entrants sont bas\u00e9s en \u00c9gypte. La Banque Internationale Arabe de Tunisie (BIAT) est l\u2019une des plus fortes progressions, passant de la 50e place dans l\u2019enqu\u00eate de l\u2019ann\u00e9e derni\u00e8re \u00e0 la 38e place dans notre classement pour 2022, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une augmentation de 177 millions de dollars de son capital de premi\u00e8re cat\u00e9gorie, qui atteint 768 millions de dollars. L\u2019United Bank of Egypt a gagn\u00e9 15 places pour atteindre le 55<sup>e<\/sup> rang et la Standard Bank Mozambique 14 places pour atteindre le 66e rang, tandis que la Bank Windhoek gagne 9 places pour atteindre le 81<sup>e<\/sup> rang.<\/p>\n<p>La finance islamique continue de faire des perc\u00e9es r\u00e9guli\u00e8res dans certaines parties du continent. La Banque Nationale d\u2019Alg\u00e9rie, par exemple, est en train d\u2019ouvrir une douzaine de succursales qui ne proposeront que des produits de finance islamique, tandis que la Omdurman National Bank au Soudan d\u00e9veloppe ses op\u00e9rations bancaires islamiques par le biais de canaux num\u00e9riques. En \u00c9gypte, o\u00f9 la premi\u00e8re banque suivant les principes de la finance islamique a \u00e9t\u00e9 lanc\u00e9e en 1967, 14 des 38 banques agr\u00e9\u00e9es du pays proposent des produits bancaires islamiques. Certains affirment qu\u2019elle permet d\u2019investir davantage d\u2019argent dans des secteurs plus productifs de l\u2019\u00e9conomie, notamment l\u2019agriculture, que la banque traditionnelle, car il existe des restrictions quant aux secteurs qui peuvent en b\u00e9n\u00e9ficier.<\/p>\n<p><strong>L\u2019\u00c9thiopie s\u2019ouvre <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Le d\u00e9veloppement le plus important dans le secteur bancaire africain est peut-\u00eatre celui qui n\u2019a pas encore \u00e9t\u00e9 ressenti dans nos classements. Le gouvernement \u00e9thiopien a finalement d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de lib\u00e9raliser son industrie bancaire, ouvrant le secteur \u00e0 la concurrence des banques \u00e9trang\u00e8res. Cela constitue non seulement une grande opportunit\u00e9 pour les autres banques africaines, mais pourrait \u00e9galement d\u00e9clencher de profonds changements au sein des banques \u00e9thiopiennes \u00e9tablies, afin qu\u2019elles soient confront\u00e9es \u00e0 la concurrence de banques qui ont m\u00fbri sur des march\u00e9s plus lib\u00e9ralis\u00e9s. Il n\u2019y a actuellement que deux banques \u00e9thiopiennes dans notre Top 100 : la Commercial Bank of Ethiopia en 32e position et l\u2019Awash International Bank en 91<sup>e<\/sup> position, un maigre rendement compte tenu du fait que les 121 millions d\u2019habitants du pays repr\u00e9sentent 11,5 % des 1,4 milliard d\u2019habitants de l\u2019Afrique et qu\u2019il peut se targuer d\u2019avoir connu la croissance \u00e9conomique la plus rapide du continent au cours de la derni\u00e8re d\u00e9cennie. Toutefois, les tensions entre les ambitions \u00e9conomiques et les niveaux \u00e9lev\u00e9s de contr\u00f4le de l\u2019\u00c9tat devraient progressivement d\u00e9boucher sur la lib\u00e9ralisation des secteurs qui restent fortement r\u00e9glement\u00e9s. L\u2019ann\u00e9e derni\u00e8re, Addis-Abeba a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 que les banques nationales devaient se pr\u00e9parer \u00e0 la d\u00e9r\u00e9glementation et \u00e0 une concurrence accrue. Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 sugg\u00e9r\u00e9 au d\u00e9but de cette ann\u00e9e que les banques \u00e9trang\u00e8res pourraient \u00eatre tenues d\u2019op\u00e9rer en \u00c9thiopie en partenariat avec les banques locales, mais les d\u00e9tails des plans de d\u00e9r\u00e9glementation d\u00e9finitifs sont encore en cours de finalisation en vue de leur publication en d\u00e9cembre.<\/p>\n<p>On ne sait pas encore si toutes les restrictions sur le rapatriement des b\u00e9n\u00e9fices seront lev\u00e9es, mais il est probable qu\u2019il y aura une certaine consolidation parmi les 24 banques qui op\u00e8rent actuellement dans le pays. Le secteur a \u00e9t\u00e9 ferm\u00e9 aux banques \u00e9trang\u00e8res afin de prot\u00e9ger les banques nationales et des sources \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur du pays sugg\u00e8rent que les banques \u00e9thiopiennes ont b\u00e9n\u00e9fici\u00e9 d\u2019un rendement des capitaux propres sup\u00e9rieur \u00e0 20 %, bien plus \u00e9lev\u00e9 que la moyenne mondiale. La d\u00e9r\u00e9glementation devrait permettre aux PME \u00e9thiopiennes d\u2019acc\u00e9der plus facilement au cr\u00e9dit et aux entreprises \u00e9thiopiennes de toutes tailles d\u2019obtenir des devises fortes. Elle devrait \u00e9galement inciter les banques locales \u00e0 moderniser leur technologie et \u00e0 adopter davantage la banque num\u00e9rique. Il sera int\u00e9ressant de voir si l\u2019afflux attendu de banques \u00e9trang\u00e8res entra\u00eenera un passage plus rapide \u00e0 la banque num\u00e9rique sur un march\u00e9 qui reste domin\u00e9 par de vastes r\u00e9seaux d\u2019agences, la Commercial Bank of Ethiopia exploitant environ 1 300 agences au service de ses 22 millions de clients et l\u2019Awash Bank 566 agences couvrant 5 millions de clients.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Digitalisation <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Le secteur bancaire africain est en pleine mutation, notamment en raison de la num\u00e9risation rapide des infrastructures et des services bancaires. Sous la pression de la fourniture de services financiers par les entreprises de t\u00e9l\u00e9communications, les banques num\u00e9riques et, plus largement, les opportunit\u00e9s offertes par la fintech, les banques africaines \u00e9tablies sont contraintes de changer leur fa\u00e7on de travailler. L\u2019acc\u00e8s croissant aux smartphones et autres appareils connect\u00e9s \u00e0 Internet permet de fournir des services de mani\u00e8re virtuelle aux clients. Le rythme de la r\u00e9volution num\u00e9rique ne fait que s\u2019acc\u00e9l\u00e9rer en raison des restrictions li\u00e9es \u00e0 la Covid-19 et il est possible que le nombre d\u2019agences bancaires physiques sur le continent ait d\u00e9j\u00e0 atteint son maximum, la Standard Bank en Afrique du Sud et la Standard Chartered Nigeria, par exemple, ayant d\u00e9j\u00e0 ferm\u00e9 un grand nombre de leurs agences. L\u2019adoption d\u2019une approche purement num\u00e9rique permet aux banques d\u2019\u00e9viter les co\u00fbts li\u00e9s \u00e0 la construction d\u2019un r\u00e9seau d\u2019agences, tout en \u00e9vitant les d\u00e9fis li\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019h\u00e9ritage informatique.<\/p>\n<p>La technologie num\u00e9rique a d\u00e9j\u00e0 fait de l\u2019Afrique subsaharienne le deuxi\u00e8me march\u00e9 bancaire r\u00e9gional \u00e0 la croissance la plus rapide au monde, ainsi que le deuxi\u00e8me march\u00e9 le plus rentable. Le nombre d\u2019agences physiques g\u00e9r\u00e9es par une banque devenant un indicateur moins pr\u00e9cis de la taille d\u2019une banque donn\u00e9e, il sera int\u00e9ressant de voir combien de temps il faudra \u00e0 la premi\u00e8re banque num\u00e9rique pour entrer dans notre Top 100. Elles se d\u00e9veloppent plus rapidement que leurs homologues plus traditionnelles, avec Bettr et TymeBank, toutes deux d\u2019Afrique du Sud, ainsi que Chipper Cash du Nigeria, les plus grandes en termes de base de client\u00e8le, avec respectivement 6,5 millions, 4 millions et 4 millions de clients.<\/p>\n<p>Des obstacles subsistent en ce qui concerne les avantages que les banques traditionnelles conservent en utilisant leurs marques \u00e9tablies tout en construisant de nouvelles plateformes num\u00e9riques, les limitations en mati\u00e8re de mat\u00e9riel informatique et de connaissances des clients, et l\u2019incapacit\u00e9 de certaines banques centrales et autres r\u00e9gulateurs \u00e0 cr\u00e9er un environnement propice \u00e0 la banque num\u00e9rique, car ils craignent qu\u2019un changement rapide ne permette l\u2019\u00e9mergence de pratiques bancaires instables. Pour s\u2019attaquer \u00e0 ce dernier obstacle, il faudra avant tout changer la culture bancaire. Dans le m\u00eame temps, la r\u00e9volution num\u00e9rique encourage tous les prestataires de services financiers \u00e0 augmenter les taux de p\u00e9n\u00e9tration bancaire. Alors que nombre d\u2019entre eux se concentraient autrefois sur le service aux particuliers fortun\u00e9s et aux grandes entreprises, l\u2019attrait du march\u00e9 de masse et des PME est stimul\u00e9 par la baisse des co\u00fbts d\u2019exploitation qu\u2019offrent les plateformes num\u00e9riques. Pourtant, les banques africaines ont toujours tendance \u00e0 acheter des obligations d\u2019\u00c9tat plut\u00f4t que de pr\u00eater davantage \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9conomie r\u00e9elle, notamment par le biais de pr\u00eats aux entreprises et aux PME.<\/p>\n<p><strong>M\u00e9thodologie <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>L\u2019enqu\u00eate sur les 100 premi\u00e8res banques classe les banques en fonction de leurs fonds propres de cat\u00e9gorie 1. Celui-ci se compose de : capital + r\u00e9serves + b\u00e9n\u00e9fices non distribu\u00e9s + int\u00e9r\u00eats minoritaires. Ces chiffres sont publi\u00e9s en monnaie locale puis convertis en dollars am\u00e9ricains aux taux de change en vigueur \u00e0 la date de cl\u00f4ture de l\u2019exercice dans les r\u00e9sultats (ou au 31 d\u00e9cembre 2021), de sorte que les variations des taux de change peuvent affecter le classement. Les donn\u00e9es proviennent du Bankers\u2019 Almanac et des recherches internes d\u2019<em>African Business<\/em>.
